Jumpy,

When Paul quoted some of the Greek poets did that make him a pagan? (Acts 17:28). Calvinism is worse than paganism but they often do say some wholesome things about the WOF bunch of pagans. That's why Jesus said:

The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. (Matthew 23:2-3).

Interesting post.
I had a very similar experience to Martin Horan's.
I sense, reading this, that he feels he has let his sister down. How many of us often say "If only I knew then, what I know now"? But the plain fact of the matter is that we didn't! Such is God's eternal wisdom.
Martin must in NO way feel responsible, for his 'failings' as it were. He must NEVER, ever feel guilty. Is not this charge constantly used against His people-Revelation 12.10?
There is a secular quote that says "Youth is wasted on the young". (or words to that effect).
I agree wholeheartedly with Martin's comment that these Prosperity preachers/Word of Faith charlatans teachings are utterly "unbiblical": They promise the earth, but deliver nothing. Their whole doctrinal ministry is utterly against what God's Word teaches (this is supported by many other articles on your website).
It is interesting, and it does somewhat surprise me that he quotes Justin Peters a (dreaded?) Calvinist, though his ministry is now tainted by Dispensational teaching. I only say this because of the words Martin has on other pages used to describe those who agree with Calvin's doctrine.

I remember the eldest of my two sisters, M, getting involved in that stuff with a group of people she got in with in 2000 or 2001. She had cancer and they urged her to name it and claim it. My wife and I had come out of a cult at the time and, sadly, swallowed some of this name-it-and-claim-it stuff. I know people also from my former cult, who at that time, for whom this wealth and health "gospel" seemed to be working.
When my other sister, P, urged me to get my sister M thinking straight I just kept telling her, "I will back M in whatever she chooses." I am sorry now that I took that foolish attitude.
In fact, I was agreeing with M at the time and, as my sister, P, had not really taken a stance to get baptised, I saw her as lacking faith or understanding. My sister M's cancer got worse, in spite of the fact that Wendy told her before that (I think) that she'd be okay.
Had my sister gone to the hospital with her breast cancer in the first place, she would have likely lived longer because her cancer then was still operable.
My main worry now is that M was not saved. It now strikes me that her faith was in these quacks rather than in Jesus. Of course now I see that in retrospecct. So I sadly regret now I didn't know then what I know now about this name-it-and-claim it stuff.
I notice on a friend's F/B (who had been in the same cult as my wife and I were) is still into that same stuff thirteen or so years later.
She has lots of positive quotes on her site from secular (I'd imagine) writers, none of which is categorically Christian. All positive thinking. I reneMber ger husband getting angry at me, probably over a decade ago, for saying something negative about Jesse DuPlantis. He said that God was listening to me and that Jesse DuPlantis was a man of God. (Tha'S the Jesse Du Plantis who was caught up to heaven and went into a cable car up to God's throne. You can find what he "teaches" on Justin Peters' teachings on youtube.)
It is so sad to think of what happened to my sister and what's still happening to old friends through this prosperity gospel. I Hope that people who read this article pray that other people--those involved in these unbiblical prosperity teachings--find it on line and realise that they are being deceived.
These prosperity preachers say that we shopuld always be positive and never negative. Jesus must have got that wrong then when you read Matt 24, Luke 13, Revelation, &c! Jesus was openly critical of the Scribes, Pharisees and Sadducees. That's why they wanted to kill Him.
Thank you for this excellent article, Debs and doing as Jude 3 tells us--to contend earnestly for the faith once delivered.
