Hi there, I know this article was quite some time ago, but I only discovered your website now (which is awesome by the way!). I just have a question regarding the prayers in the Bible. Wasn’t the prayer of Jabez in 1 Chr 4:10 also one of them? Thanks for the great work!

  4. YvC

Indeed, the prayer of Jabez is a prayer in the Bible but has unfortunately been trasnformed into a kind of mantra-prayer by Bruce Wilkinson who says that when you pray this prayer God must answer it.

Who does not want his personal dreams to come true? In fact, it is one of the major traits of man’s deceitful and desperately wicked heart (Jeremiah 117:9) to always want things to go his way. Indeed, it actually undermines the biblical truth that “all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).

I have often wondered what today’s super apostles would do if they too had to be content with the dream (will) God had for Paul of Tarsus? “ . . . he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles and kings, and the children of Israel: for I will show him how many things he must suffer for my name’s sake (Acts 9:15).

If you truly love God with all your heart, soul and strength you will always be content with HIS PURPOSE for your life (not Rick Warren’s infamous and deceitful “Purpose Driven Life”). If it is his will for you to be cast in prison so that HE may reach a single prison ward for his Son Jesus Christ, He will do so.

Most of today’s teaching revolves aroung how to become rich and prosperous? . . . how to become a popular super televangelist? . . . how to be a great miracle worker and healer of the sick? . . . how to be one of the most influential Christians in your church and teach others how to pray a prayer that God ALWAYS answers? . . . how to positively teach others how to be positively positive in all things? . . . how to incarnate Jesus Christ into all the cultures through your good philantropic work amongst the poor (aka the Emergent Church) so that YOU may bring God’s Kingdom on earth? . . . how to transform the society by virtue of your puny little norms and values. Do you want to succeed in all these things? Don’t fret, its as easy as eating choclate icecream. Bruce will teach you how to pray his magical Jabez prayer and voila you will succeed at what you were born to do.

I have learned to rather pray the “Our Father in heaven” prayer and use it as an example of how we should pray.

  5. YvZ says:

Thomas, I have never thought of it this way. I am so over all these so called prophets, apostels, authors and will never buy anything from a Christian book store again. So very true what you are saying. Every book or teaching is like one magic potion after the other they feed you. The sad thing is, Christians get so confused which potion to use and in the end give up on Christianity in general.

    Thank you for the list
