i realised that the xenophobic people are black South Africans. They hate foreigners who look black. White foreigners have no problems in South Africa except being a subjected to crime, like robbery or murder.

I think the South African govt has not made success in changing the lives of black people - but used media to spiral blame on foreigners. I have heard on many occasions the media speaking in isiZulu, telling people that foreigners are coming to commit crime.

The truth is, in almost all of the criminal activities you'll realise that there is no foreigner involved, its local South Africans.

Foreigners, mostly want jobs and they leave their countries because they have no choice, they either face death or eternal persecution by war or by govt. The good example is Zimbabwe, where the govt kills opposition activists or Somalia rated the most dangerous place is the world. I have met South Africans that work in other countries, and they will certainly not like it, if we do to them what they do to us in their country.

I blame the govt of South Africa, for fueling xenophobia and creating an escape for their failure to provide, education, technical skills, community support and funding to South African black people. Now they have started fueling the fact that it's the white people that suppressed them and that is the reason they have no jobs. When did South Africa get its independence? How long does it take to put measures into effect that will improve people's lives? Is it the Affirmative Action that will achieve it? - by taking an uneducated black person to be a dummy part of the company, but not contribute anything strategic?

I went to Wits University in braamfontein and most of the people i saw were white and Indian, the only black i decided to speak to, was a foreigner - i got to know. Why?

White people are suffering in South Africa too. They are actually feeling the burden of accusation of long gone marginalisation/apartheid, because its being brought back against them. They can;t get jobs because they are white.

Where is South Africa heading? The economy is good, but the social fabric is in a brink of disaster.

Deborah (Discerning the World)

Yeah maybe we should do dat lol lol lol

I went and had a look at the word xenophobia on Wiki.

Xenophobia is the uncontrollable fear of foreigners. [1] It comes from the Greek words ξένος (xenos), meaning "stranger," "foreigner" and φόβος (phobos), meaning "fear." Xenophobia can manifest itself in many ways involving the relations and perceptions of an ingroup towards an outgroup, including a fear of losing identity, suspicion of its activities, aggression, and desire to eliminate its presence to secure a presumed purity.[2] Xenophobia can also be exhibited in the form of an "uncritical exaltation of another culture" in which a culture is ascribed "an unreal, stereotyped and exotic quality".[3]

General

According to the Oxford Standard English Dictionary (OED), the word xenophobia consists of two parts: xeno (a combining form meaning "guest, stranger, foreigner") and phobia, ("fear, horror or aversion, especially if morbid"). Definition: A deep antipathy toward foreigners. Antipathy: Opposite of sympathy.[4]

The definition of xenophobia is both common and technical. The common parlance is: Unreasonable fear or hatred of the unfamiliar, especially people of other races.[5] The clinical definition is: An irrational fear of members of a certain race foreign to one's own, often adjunct and secondary to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Also: One of the attitude groupings characteristic of The Authoritarian Personality.[6] A Vietnam veteran witnessed Viet Cong skinning his fellow soldiers alive. He developed hatred of people with Mongol eyelids. In both cases, the xenophobia was adjunct to PTSD.[7]

It is more broadly defined in the Dictionary of Psychology "a fear of strangers".[8] As defined by the OED, it can mean a fear of or aversion to, not only persons from other countries, but other cultures, subcultures and subsets of belief systems; in short, anyone who meets any list of criteria about their origin, religion, personal beliefs, habits, language, orientations, or any other criteria. While some will state that the "target" group is a set of persons not accepted by the society, in reality only the phobic person need hold the belief that the target group is not (or should not be) accepted by society. While the phobic person is aware of the aversion (even hatred) of the target group, they may not identify it or accept it as a fear.

A xenophobic person has to genuinely think or believe at some level that the target is in fact a foreigner. This arguably separates xenophobia from racism and ordinary prejudice in that someone of a different race does not necessarily have to be of a different nationality. In various contexts, the terms "xenophobia" and "racism" seem to be used interchangeably, though they can have wholly different meanings (xenophobia can be based on various aspects, racism being based solely on race ethnicity and ancestry). Xenophobia can also be directed simply to anyone outside of a culture, not necessarily one particular race or people.

Xenophobia has two main objects:

The first is a population group present within a society that is not considered part of that society. Often they are recent immigrants, but xenophobia may be directed against a group which has been present for centuries, or became part of this society through conquest and territorial expansion. This form of xenophobia can elicit or facilitate hostile and violent reactions, such as mass expulsion of immigrants, pogroms or in other cases, genocide.

The second form of xenophobia is primarily cultural, and the objects of the phobia are cultural elements which are considered alien. All cultures are subject to external influences, but cultural xenophobia is often narrowly directed, for instance, at foreign loan words in a national language. It rarely leads to aggression against individual persons, but can result in political campaigns for cultural or linguistic purification. In addition, entire xenophobic societies tend not to be open to interactions from anything "outside" themselves, resulting in an isolationism that can further xenophobia.

Law to get tough on xenophobia
2010-07-19 18:09

Cape Town – The department of justice is in the process of preparing a bill that will make South African law tougher on hate crimes – such as those fuelled by xenophobia, it said.

According to records on the Parliamentary Monitoring Group website, the bill is expected to be submitted to Parliament this year and it is hoped that it will have a “positive impact on victims of crime, particularly foreigners who have been subject to xenophobic attacks”.

You know, I think all South Africans need to cross out their nationality on their passports and put the name of another country of their choice in it's place, thereby making us foreigners and for the first time we will be protected by crime and have criminals dealt with speedily.

Aaaah, I seem to have got it wrong, but I thought you seemed vaguely familiar:) I meant to query what Lynette gave as stats, but then you knew that!

But now that you mention it, can Lynette possibly get us that stat as well? That is, what percentage of murders are actually committed by Whites in relation to their population percentage of 10%?

Interesting statistic: 25% are white murders. Where can we reliably verify that figure?
